What I learned at Midnight.

"Words," said Albus Dumbledore, "are our most inexhaustible source of magic."

Mischief Managed.

So, I have never claimed to be perfect, but since I have revealed a lot about living with David, I figured it was time to do some confessing of my own ...

  1. Sometimes I barely make it out of my pjs before David comes home for lunch. I'll rush to put on clothes when he says he's coming home so I look like I've been productive all day.
  2. I act like I like a really clean house, but typically at the end of the day the den is full of my scattered shoes and books.
  3. And when I do clean things up, really I just hide them. We keep losing things because I've "cleaned them up so well." The truth is I keep shoving things in weird places only to find them two months after they are needed.
  4. Sometimes, I end up cooking a "three course meal," but this does not mean what you think. It means first the meat or main dish is ready, so I make David eat it before it's cold. Then the side dishes finish, followed finally by the rolls. I just can't get my timing down.
  5. And finally, this confession may make some say "duh," but I am a little bit of a drama queen. Example: All along I have been "okay" with going to see Harry Potter not at midnight this time. "Logically" it would be cheaper to go to the matinee the next day. "Logically" it would be easier not to fight the crowds. But suddenly, yesterday morning, I was in tears because never ever again would there be a midnight showing of Harry, and I wouldn't be able to tell my children I celebrated the last Harry Potter at midnight with the world. Truthfully, I wanted to fight the crowd, cheer when the movie began, the works.

So, tonight we will fight the crowds, pay too much money and celebrate! And here's the truth: I'm not very clean, I'm not a great cook, and sometimes, I may be slightly illogical, but I sure am thankful for David who puts up with me - Mischief Managed :)

Office Decor?

So, now that I've ordered the books for my classes in the fall, being a teacher feel much more real than it ever did. I keep trying to imagine the first day - what I will wear, what I will say, whether or not I will sweat through my shirt writing on the board, whether they will think I'm a crazy nerd etc. etc. There is even a t-shirt in the bookstore that says "War Damn Library" that I thought might be a funny first day outfit (ha). But now, I think I've decided I should seal the deal on that last thought - the nerdy one - and I'm thinking I should buy these two posters and put them side-by-side in my office:

I think they'd keep the Cam Newton poster in good company. And in case any of you forgot how I feel about Harry Potter,  I just thought I'd remind you there are 30 days 'til the last Harry Potter movie ever. EVER. Good vs. Evil. Perfect for the office of an English teacher.

FRIDAY: See You at Midnight

When I put the two words "Harry Potter" in a blogpost, I know some people will immediately quit reading. However, this is not just about Harry Potter. This is not just about books and nerdy fads. Really, it's about growing up. When Harry Potter first hit the bookshelves, I was ten turning eleven. I was a 5th grader who was learning to switch classes and had a locker for the very first time. I was making fortune tellers in class and predicting everyone's future. I had a skip-it and loved showing boys how tough I was by eating insane amounts of warheads.

And you know who else was ten? Harry Potter. While I was collecting Pogs, he was collecting chocolate frog cards. When I was playing on my first basketball team, he was trying out for quidditch, and when I took the SAT, he was taking his OWLS. As each book came out, the characters in Harry Potter grew up with the rest of the kids born in 1987. They were freaking out about tests, getting first kisses, and dealing with serious changes in the world at the exact same time we did. He was part of our culture. (published in 1997, first movie released in 2000)

And that's what makes this story so great at its core; readers/viewers get to grow up with these kids. We come of age with them. So, if you can't get into the magic, simply enjoy growing up with three good friends.  Get Ready - Deathly Hallows this Friday!
